ONE Nutrient That Could Prevent Your DEATH

By Kevin DiDonato MS, CSCS, CES

One day you’re out for a walk with your neighbor, and suddenly – without warning - your vision starts to change.

You find that there is numbness and tingling down your whole right side.

You become disoriented, confused…

Your friend tries to get you to sit, but you have NO IDEA how to do it, or even what it means…

You have trouble speaking, partly due to a non-functioning tongue, the other due to the sudden and severe headache throbbing in your temples...

What is happening to you, you scream out, but it sounds jumbled and incoherent…

Your friend calls 9-1-1 as you struggle to grasp what is happening you.

****

The scene above can happen to anyone.

In fact, estimates show that over 700,000 people experience this exact scenario every year – some with good outcomes and others with less than optimal outcomes.

This happens to one person every 4 minutes and accounts for nearly 130,000 deaths each year.

And, it is the NUMBER ONE cause of disability in the US.

What is it?

Stroke.

And if you’re not watching your diet, taking your medications, or exercising, than your risk for having one increases – especially if there’s family history or if you have cardiovascular risk factors currently.

Now, diet plays a very important role in stroke prevention.  But there may be ONE nutrient that outweighs all the others in reducing your stroke risk.

Fiber and Stroke Risk

Fiber not only plays a large role in your heart health, but may also improve fat loss, improve cholesterol levels, and may even lower blood pressure.

However, there has been very little evidence supporting the role fiber plays in stroke prevention.

Until now!

But first, you need to understand the role fiber plays in your body.

Fiber comes in two different forms – soluble and insoluble.

Both forms of fiber are hard to break down, and perform very important jobs in your body.

Soluble fiber – which dissolves in water, creating a gel-like substance – wraps itself around food particles, therefore slowing digestion and absorption of the nutrients.

Result: slower release of sugar and nutrients into the intestines, therefore a slower release into your bloodstream.

Insoluble fiber, on the other hand, is also not able to be broken down.   It travels through your body and intestines, collecting waste and other undigested food particles, plus bile, and sends it out of your body.

Result: lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and better digestive health.

Now, both types are very important for your overall health, and a new study shows that fiber plays an important role in stroke prevention.

As you know, increased dietary fiber may reduce some of the factors that are associated with strokes, like blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, and others.

Now, a new study shows that with every SEVEN-gram increase of fiber in your diet, your risk for having a stroke may reduce by SEVEN percent (in first time stroke sufferers)!
And, they found that increased dietary fiber was associated with a lower risk for both hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes. The study’s
authors concluded:
“Greater dietary fiber intake is significantly associated with lower risk of first stroke.  Overall, findings support dietary recommendations to increase intake of total dietary fiber.”
Boost Your Fiber Intake Today

If you’re interested in reducing your risk for having a stroke, then look no further than at the foods you eat.

Eating more fiber-rich foods, like fruits (with the skin), vegetables, whole grain products, and sprouted-grain foods are important sources of fiber.

And, as this study suggests, a SEVEN-gram increase in fiber may result in a SEVEN percent decrease in your risk for having your first stroke.

Take home message: increase your fiber intake, not only for better overall health, but to reduce your risk for TWO different types of strokes!
